(Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kradical for the tip.)

I write like
James Joyce

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

Based on the analysis of the first chapter of the novel. Suppose it could be worse--apparently "Dan Brown" is also an option.

I have one more thingy I want to tweak in the manuscript and then it's time to render it from Scrivener into a printout. Oh, and I have a job interview today for a bankruptcy law firm. If nothing else, I'll be feeling awfully darn confident and upbeat.

Today (so far) I took pleasure in waking up and realizing ZOMG NOVEL IS READY.

Today (so far) I learned that, um, I write like James Joyce, according to Coding Robots.

Icon Meme

wonderbink: The outline of a star surrounded by tiny (illegible) writing (choose)
1. Reply to this post with 'Icons!', and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.

These are the five that [livejournal.com profile] azewewish picked out:

makeawish -- I think I picked this one up from the [livejournal.com profile] eddieizzard community. [livejournal.com profile] piperredfern made it originally. I use it a lot for "good luck!" type replies to posts, or when I'm making a wish myself.

snakes -- One of my early crude attempts at icon-making, this is a still frame from the MST3K episode "Cave Dwellers" (Miles O'Keeffe wresting a giant snake puppet) combined with a memorable line from another MST3K episode, "Eegah!" (The line is dubbed in weirdly, which adds to the surrealism of it, and thus became one of those catchphrases among MSTies.) Obviously, I use this one a lot in the [livejournal.com profile] mst3k community.

sylvian -- because if I'm going to worship at the altar of David Sylvian, I should at least have an icon of the man, right? I put this one together myself.

boobies -- this lovely pair of boobies comes from a picture that my dad took. (Wow, that sounds really bad without the proper context.)

cookie monster abc -- I have no idea who made this icon originally (I swiped it from the collection of one [livejournal.com profile] ruby_stevens) but I am eternally grateful. This is a still from a classic (and clearly unscripted) bit on Sesame Street where the little girl reciting the ABCs with Kermit blurts out "Cookie Monster!" and starts giggling. Kermit goes all crumpleface and objects that "Cookie Monster is not a letter of the alphabet!" So they try again, and, as small children do when they find something that amuses them, she does it again. Kermit gets frustrated and walks off. "I love you!" the girl calls after him. Kermit comes back and says "I love you, too." I learned to read because of Sesame Street, so this little moment warms my little Gen-X nostalgic heart.

Today I took pleasure in laughing my ass off at the "Put Down The Ducky" sequence that was one link away on YouTube.

Today I learned that a four-pound chicken will, indeed, fit in my crock pot.

I just did a backdated entry about my Dad's birthday, in case it gets buried on your f-list.

Eeneyway. Have some memage:

Leave me a comment and I will reply with why I like you. If I don't know you, I'll either make something up or tell you why I like your LiveJournal. You must pay for the privilege by posting a message like this one on your LiveJournal.

Today I took pleasure in bashing out more wordage on my NaNo.

Today I learned about some new inventions that are making the futuristic aspects of my NaNo look a bit dated already.

1. Stop talking about politics for a moment or two.
2. Post a reasonably-sized picture in your LJ, NOT under a cut tag, of something pleasant, such as an adorable kitten, or a fluffy white cloud, or a bottle of booze. Something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS.
3. Include these instructions, and share the love.

I give you . . . Nick Rhodes juggling!

Take a picture of yourself right now. Don’t change your clothes. Don’t fix your hair. Just take a picture. Post that picture with no editing. (Except maybe to get the image size down to something reasonable. Don’t go posting an eight megapixel image.) Include these instructions.

Just got the shirt today, btw . . .

Today I took pleasure in hearing some good poetry in a groovy space.

Today I learned what the U-Space Gallery (aforementioned groovy space) was like.

. . . so here's a shiny meme instead! (Horked from [livejournal.com profile] julieduranie and [livejournal.com profile] supervesna.)

1. How old will you turn in 2008?
Thirty-eight.

2. Do you think you'll be married by then?
Only if I completely lose my mind in a whirlwind courtship or something.

3. What do you look forward to most in the next 3 months?
Going to London.

4. Do you like to say "I told you so?"
Not really.

5. Who was the last person to call you?
My mom, this morning, to see if I was awake yet.

6. Do you prefer call or text?
Text is actually more convenient, since I can pick it up and respond whenever. Text conversations have a little extra excitement to them--each new message is like a present.

7. Do you have any pets?
Not at the moment. Just a couple of houseplants.

8. What were you doing at 1:30 am?
Sleeping.

9. What were you doing at 3:00 am?
See previous answer.

10. When is the last time you saw your mom?
This evening, when I went to Mom and Dad's for dinner.

11. What is your mood?
Not too bad.

12. How many houses have you lived in?
Five, I guess. Maybe seven or eight if you count apartments.

13. How many city/towns have you lived in?
It's pretty much been Atlanta my whole life. You could up the count to three if you include the few months after my birth in Boston and the two months I lived in Nagoya.

14. Do you prefer shoes, socks or bare feet?
Bare feet.

15. Are you a social person?
Depends on the society I find myself in.

16. What was the last thing you ate?
A slice of my mom's bread that I couldn't finish because I was too full. I felt terribly guilty about letting bread like that go to waste.

17. What's your favorite color?
Red, especially deep crimson shades of it.

18. What are you doing for your next birthday?
Haven't decided yet. It's on a Saturday this year, I believe, so I should have some fun with it.

19. What is your favorite TV show?
Mystery Science Theater 3000

20. What kind of jelly do you like on your PB & J sandwich?
Raspberry jam.

21. Do you like coffee?
I prefer tea, but since I've been placed in charge of coffee at work, I've re-aquired a taste for the stuff.

22. What are you listening to?
The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place by Explosions in the Sky.

23. Do you have an iPod?
Yep. iPod Mini with a rubber skin that glows in the dark. I named it Marvin.

24. How do you feel about the last person you kissed?
I have an enormous crush on him but I can't do anything with it.

25. Do you sleep on a certain side of the bed?
I have a single bed--I sleep in the middle of it.

26. Do you know how to play poker?
Yep. Though I sometimes have to bust out a reference book to figure out the rankings of the more complicated hands.

27. What are you thinking about right now?
The answers to these questions.

28. Any plans for this weekend?
I just finished the weekend! Next weekend, I'm going to Chattacon.

29. Have you cut your hair this week?
Nope. Think I'm scheduled for a cut in February.

30. Last picture you took?
The snow outside, yesterday.

31. Are you a tease?
Apparently.

32. Have you ever been in an ambulance?
Not that I remember.

33. Do you prefer an ocean or pool?
Ocean, definitely.

34. Do you smile often?
As often as I feel the need to.

35. What color are your bed sheets?
Sort of cream with a pattern. My parents bought them for me so my bed would better match the decor of the room I was staying in at the time. I should really get some that match me better, but it's not a pressing need.

36. What is your favorite thing to spend money on?
Food. Particularly dinners out, which is an indulgence I really need to rein in a bit.

37. Do you wear any jewelry 24/7?
Nope. I wear a watch fairly often, but I take it off eventually.

38. Have you heard a rumor about yourself this week?
Not this week, but I have come across some pretty interesting rumors about me.

39. Who is the funniest person you know?
I'd actually have to say [livejournal.com profile] britpoptarts--she can go off on these rambles that have me absolutely helpless with laughter.

41. Where do you want to go to college?
I've already been--you can't make me go back!

42. Who was the last person to make you cry?
Mr. TBH, I suppose, when I was thinking about him recently and trying to let go.

43. Do you shut off the water while you brush your teeth?
I'm baffled to realize that some people don't do that.

44. Do you wish you were with someone right now?
If I'd wanted to be around even more people than I've been around today, I would have gone to Java Monkey for poetry. As it is, I'm kinda content to keep my own company for now.

45. Are you mad about anything?
I try not to be.

46. Last person to im you?
Adam.

47. What are you doing besides this?
Sipping lemon water and, um, listening to music.

[First lines of the first public entries for each month . . . ]

January: So I entered the year 2007 in a state of complete sobriety.

February: Sooooo . . . hi.

March: Got cleaning done, got writing done and even picked up the guitar and attempted to play it.

April: So, Lent is over and I'm going bonkers all over the internets.

May: That is all.

June: Now I'm all pissed off again.

July: This website is eating my life!!!

August: So LJ is deleting journals again, only this time, they're actually looking at the content, applying the Miller Test and nuking the ones that flunk it.

September: . . . which meant I spent most of this evening catching up on internet stuff.

October: So.

November: Happy Guy Fawkes Day, everybody!

December: So, first off, Happy Birthday to Mr. Warren Bruce Cuccurullo.

Meanwhile, in 2008, well, it's off to a good enough start. Rocked it in with The Forty-Fives, as I mentioned before, but bailed before Gringo Star started playing because I was getting tired of being surrounded by obnoxiously drunk people. My personal New Year's Eve tradition has become to stay sober so I can actually remember midnight.

Today it's back to work and it's the start of the month, so it's time to do billing. Whee! Having made plenty of mistakes to learn from last time around, I seem to be getting the hang of it this time. (I also got a certain smug satisfaction when Boss #1 asked me "You know you're supposed to start on the billing, right?" when I was about halfway through sorting the pre-bills and I told him "I'm already working on it.")

I found my camera and snapped a picture of the froggy. I'll get it uploaded soon so y'all can see.

Today I took pleasure in bringing home groceries in a big brown bag.

Today I learned just how high I can push the top margin in WordPerfect.

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. I read your journals, or we have something else in common and we chat occasionally. Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me and I thank you for your interest in my words.

But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...they listen in rapture to the love-music of she-turnips." (Think of it as your Christmas present to me!)

I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal and see what gems of knowledge appear.
wonderbink: The outline of a star surrounded by tiny (illegible) writing (choose)
Ask me any three questions (or less) and I'll answer all of them 100% truthfully.

1.
2.
3.

Then copy this into your journal and see what others ask about you.
wonderbink: The outline of a star surrounded by tiny (illegible) writing (Default)
Respond to this and I will do the following:

1. Tell you why I friended you.
2. Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, etc.
3. Tell you something I like about you.
4. Tell you a memory I have of you.
5. Ask something I've always wanted to know about you.
6. Tell you my favorite user pic of yours.
7. In return, you must post this in your LJ.
wonderbink: The outline of a star surrounded by tiny (illegible) writing (tminick)
. . . and so am I!

Comment on this post. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along.

These are the ones that [livejournal.com profile] superactiongo asked about:

Cut for ramblage . . .  )

Today I took pleasure in dinner with Mom and Dad.

Today I learned that the suits I bought when I was first looking for a paralegal job no longer fit me now, because I bought them thirty pounds ago. (The pants on one of them literally fell off my body when I was trying them on.) Thankfully, I have a mom with a sewing machine.
wonderbink: The outline of a star surrounded by tiny (illegible) writing (tminick)
Sorry for the delay, been away from words for a while, blah-de-blah . . .

1) Which Duran Duran member did you enjoy meeting most and why? Nick Rhodes. He's always incredibly sweet, unfailingly polite and compellingly enigmatic. My encounters with him have been fleeting up to this point, but I treasure them utterly.

2) Who is your favorite local act to see live? It's frustrating because a lot of my favorite bands--The Tender Idols, The Changelings, Kenny Howes and the Yeah!--have gone and broken up on me. Of extant actually local-type bands (The Woggles don't quite count anymore, do they?) I've become very fond of Thee Crucials. They're fairly new, from what I can tell, but they put on a hell of a show.

3) What is the farthest you have traveled to see a concert and who was it? Atlanta to L.A. More than once. You can probably guess which band.

4) What do you feel is the best thing you have ever written? That's a really hard question for me to answer. I'm not a very good judge of my own work. I can say this--the one thing I've written that I'm proudest of is the NaNovel I wrote last year, not necessarily because of the writing (it still needs work . . . a lot of it) but because it was the one idea that scared me the most to write about.

5) What book has influenced you most and/or has changed your life? The easy answer is Tanith Lee's Don't Bite the Sun, which I've mentioned before. The answer that's probably truer in terms of life-changingness, as embarrassing as it may be to admit, is The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. I originally read it so I could do a snarky summary of it, but it ended up having more of an impact than I expected. Put it this way--not long after I read it, I stopped going to individual and group therapy and haven't been back since. I'm not a huge fan of the writing style, but the ideas are largely quite sound, even if I'm a little intermittent about applying them to my life.
wonderbink: The outline of a star surrounded by tiny (illegible) writing (eddie! (by vayshedruvon))
1. Name your favorite author and book (doesn't have to be by your fave author) and then tell me why those are your faves.

Tanith Lee. Who, coincidentally, wrote my favorite book Don't Bite the Sun. (It recently came back in print, along with the sequel Drinking Sapphire Wine, in a single volume called Biting the Sun. I will pimp that book to everybody I can until the day I die.) It has one of my favorite opening lines ever: "My friend Hergal had killed himself again." It took me a while to figure out why I loved the book so much. At first, I thought it was because I wanted to wander around in the world it painted--a far future society where pleasure is unlimited and only paid for in gratitude--but then I figured out that it was because I identified with the narrator, who dreamed more than was expected and felt out of place in paradise. As a teenager grappling with clinical depression, it meant more to me than I realized. I love Tanith Lee because she writes fantasy and science fiction on more of the mythic level than the mechanical level. How magic and technology works is only detailed if such details are essential to the plot. Otherwise, it just does, y'know?

2. Do you have any movies and/or books that were favorites in your childhood and still rank high on your favorites list? If so, what about them has withstood the test of time for you?

Hm. Interesting question. Off the top of my head, the original Star Wars films probably qualify. The thing I like about those films that an unfortunate number of science fiction films lack is a sense of continuance. You got a feeling if you turned a corner, there would be more of the world it depicted. Cheesy knock-offs just gave you a sense that everything on screen was all that existed. As far as books go, I can't think of anything that I read as a child that I'm in the habit of reading today. I keep threatening to give the Narnia books another go, but haven't gotten around to it.

This one was ganked from someone else's questions I believe.
3.If you could write a book with anyone (dead or alive) with whom would it be and what would the story be about?

I would be honored and thrilled to co-write a book with Neil Gaiman. What would it be about? I think it would depend on what idea came out of both of our brains put together.

4. What characteristics do you look for in your friends?

The ability to sustain an intelligent conversation. A sense of humor that resonates with mine. Honesty tempered with tact.

5. What is the one thing in the world you would change if you could. (Can be anything, an event, a set of circumstances, something that affects the entire world or just your personal part of it)

That's a tall order. Maybe I'd go back in time and stop John Lennon from being assassinated. That would pretty much change the history of the world.
wonderbink: The outline of a star surrounded by tiny (illegible) writing (tminick)
1. Which gives you the most joy: writing or music?

They both do, in different ways. Music, the way I'm using it now, is easier, since it's simply a question of pressing play and taking it in. Writing takes effort, and can be frustrating at times, but when the groove is good it's the best thing in the world. Whenever I embark on actually learning to play a musical instrument, the dynamic is bound to change.

2. Where did you grow up?

In the house on Lullwater where my parents still live to this day. My earliest distinct memory is the day we moved into that house. It was a great place to grow up.

3. How did you and [livejournal.com profile] azewewish meet?

She was a friend of a girl named Jennifer who was friends with my older siblings, [livejournal.com profile] puppetmaker40 and [livejournal.com profile] docwhoopee. We crossed paths quite a few times and she was a familiar face. We got properly acquainted when we were both at some sci-fi convention and went together to the food court for lunch. She mentioned she had some import copy of some Duran Duran CD. "Wait . . . you like Duran Duran?" And the rest was history.

4. Have you ever been truly scared for your life?

I know my father was when I fell off the basement stairs and broke my collarbone. As for myself, I think the closest I've come was when I was making a hasty turn in Midtown and was almost literally Hit By A Bus. Sometimes when I'm feeling disappointed with my life, I point out to myself that I could have died then, so everything past that point has been bonus time.

5. Are you still a Duranie?

Yeah, I am. I still love 'em, even if they do dumb things and even though I was largely disappointed with Astronaut. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt with this next one. Don't think I'll be doing eleven shows in one month like I did back in 2001, though. Just ain't quite the same, y'know?

(If you would like to interview me, just post the handy meme found in this entry in your journal and, attention whore that I am, I'll be bound to comment and ask for an interview. You can also comment in that entry if you'd like me to interview you.)
wonderbink: The outline of a star surrounded by tiny (illegible) writing (eddie! (by vayshedruvon))
1. I love your Eddie Izzard icons. How did you get turned on to him? Is there any of his stuff you actually say in real life?

I heard about him from some of my Duranie friends, strangely enough. They had a whole run of his stuff at Videodrome before it was even released in the US--they had converted PAL tapes of everything up to Dress To Kill. I watched my way through them and was hooked. Actually, I got really hooked when one of the guys at Videodrome who noticed my rental history let me know about a Q&A and signing the man was doing at Tower Records. I'll have to tell that story sometime--suffice to say that after that night I went from serious like to total awe and worship.

I've been known to quote Eddie at my parents when the situation warrants it, but I'm not generally the kind of person who says "Cake or Death!" at random intervals. I've got icons for that sort of thing.

2. I've known you so long, and known so little about you, I feel as though I've missed Everything! Tell me your life story in 500 words or less.

Hmmm. Let's see. Born in Boston, moved down to Atlanta two months after my birth. Three years in public school, five years in Catholic school and four more years in public. Went to Emory (but you kinda knew that part, didn't you?) Graduated with a Creative Writing degree. Bomped around a bunch of crappy jobs, fell in love, got my heart broken, moved to Japan for two months, moved back, bomped around a few more crappy jobs, fell in love and got my heart broken again, ended up working as a picture framer for many years while doing poetry and performance art in the off-hours. (Got a poem published in a book with Neil Gaiman.) Quit picture framing, temped for a bit, landed a sweet gig as a tech writer thanks to my brother ([livejournal.com profile] docwhoopee), followed Duran Duran around for a while, lost the sweet gig when the internet bubble collapsed, bomped around another string of crappy jobs, ran out of money and had to move back in with my parents, ended up at a bookstore, then got a paralegal certificate, landed the gig I have now, which pays enough that I can pay a mortgage on a little bitty condo that's all my own.

3. What is the most important thing you plan to do before you die?

Get a work of fiction published in a legitimate venue.

4. What are your feelings about the "fandom" and your place in it? For example, what are your favorite cons, what are you a fan of, which fans do you like to hang out with, and why?

I feel a bit "neither fish nor flesh" around a lot of fandom. I mean, yeah, I used to be a major Doctor Who geek and I'd weird people out in high school by using swear words culled from Tanith Lee novels. But then I found Duran Duran and suddenly there was this whole other world to explore and it was a world that lots more people knew about and understood. (Maybe not about Duran Duran specifically, but about music and bands in general.) I still go to Dragon*Con and Chattacon, but it's mostly because (a) Sean throws his parties then and (b) I get to meet up with people I see about once or twice a year at these very conventions. It's like a family reunion or something. The only 'fandom' I hang out with much these days is Duran Duran fandom (and even then, not as much as I used to), but I get a sense that's not the question you're asking. The fans (or fen, I suppose) I hang with are people I've gotten to know over time. I dig skiffy and fantasy and all that jazz, but I get a little annoyed with the fandom tendency to embrace things that actually kinda suck just because they're SF.

5. What kind of romantic partner do you want in your life nowadays?

Someone who turns me on and can fully reciprocate.
wonderbink: The outline of a star surrounded by tiny (illegible) writing (tminick)
1. If your 80-year-old self were to give you advice about your life right now, what would she say?

Thirty-six isn't nearly as old as you think it is.

2. Write a silly hiaku.

She wants a haiku
But my brain is way too fried
To be that clever

3. At a dance club, where can you be found? On the floor, at the bar, no where near the club in the first place? (or somewhere else)

If I like the music, I'll be on the floor. If I'm merely okay about the music, I'll be at the bar. If I hate the music, I'll be in a different dance club.

4. What do you think about hip-hop music?

I think it's kinda like graffiti--some people think it's brilliant art, other people think it's just vandalism. I think it depends on how it's done.

5. What kinds of food items do you not like to eat?

Cooked spinach, raw mushrooms, lima beans. Especially lima beans--ick! (When I was a kid, my mom tried to persuade me to eat lima beans by saying "They're not going to kill you." "I know they won't," I replied, "'cos I'm not going to eat them!")

Meme Time!

Interview meme.
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better! If I already know you well, expect the questions may be a little more intimate!
3. You WILL update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions...

So far, two people ([livejournal.com profile] froofie and [livejournal.com profile] scyllacat) have interviewed me. I'll do the answers in separate entries. Be advised that if you post this meme in your journal, I might ask you to interview me as well. (It's the meme that keeps on giving . . .)

But, first, a quickie update on the rest of my life.

Saw Pan's Labyrinth with Mr. TBH (who else?) over the weekend. It's a great film and I do recommend it, but it's very brutal. I had a couple of peeping-through-fingers moments during it.

After doing a load of silk shirts, I realized I needed an iron and and ironing board, so I got them at Target. It turned out be be cheaper than I feared it might be. So far I'm still getting the hang of the actual ironing business.

Saw about half of The Police's song at the Grammys. It wasn't knock-me-flat brilliant, but at least they seemed to be happy to be there. Alas, no Atlanta tourdates forthcoming, according to their website. Mr. TBH is thinking maybe Vegas or Boston and asked me if I wanted to go with. I'm thinking about it.

Work is still crazy. Actually put in a couple of hours on Saturday. Think it may have helped.

Today I took pleasure in playing The Woggles while washing the dishes.

Today I learned how many calories my usual lunch at Taco Bell entails. (Yikes!)
